Voice of the Intern: Meet Farhan Mohamud

As part of Walser’s 2025 NextGen Internship Program, students across departments are gaining real-world experience and sharing their perspectives along the way. In this spotlight, we’re featuring Farhan Mohamud, an IT intern and Computer Science student at Concordia University–St. Paul.

From navigating hardware and software challenges to finding his voice in a corporate setting, Farhan’s internship journey focuses on growth and gratitude. Let’s get to know him.

Who are you beyond your resume?

Beyond my resume, I’m a father, husband, and someone deeply passionate about technology. I enjoy challenging myself to make the most of every opportunity and continuously learn and grow.

What drew you to Walser-what were you looking for when you applied for this internship?

I met Robert and Efrain at the Minnesota Private Colleges’ Job & Internship Fair, where I had the chance to learn more about Walser’s IT team. They did a great job representing the company, and I felt Walser would be a great place to learn and grow professionally.

What’s something this experience taught you that you couldn’t have learned in a classroom setting?

The hands-on experience is something that isn’t available in a typical classroom. This internship has given me the opportunity to work with both hardware and software, as well as contribute to various projects that have expanded my practical knowledge.

What assumptions did you make about corporate life or the automotive industry before starting here?

Initially, I wasn’t sure if I had enough knowledge to succeed in a corporate environment. However, the team has been incredibly supportive, and I’ve been exposed to a wide range of projects and tasks. That real-world experience has proven to be the most valuable way to learn.

Who is someone on your team that you are grateful for?

I’m especially grateful to my mentor, Mark, who has guided and supported me throughout my internship.

How would you describe Wi-Fi to a caveman?

I’d say Wi-Fi is like invisible air that helps your tools talk to each other without using wires. It lets you see things like pictures and videos on your magic screen.

Sum up your experience in one word and explain why that word resonates with you.

Humbling. This has been an eye-opening learning experience. It’s made me realize the significant gap between classroom education and real-world application.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

In five years, I see myself working in a cybersecurity role, actively protecting systems and data from threats.
